.....it was me, I DID IT. I was the "lady" Paul Lewing is taking about
with the bar story with Robin Hopper. But I think Paul had had a drink or
2 before I got there because my recollection is a wee bit different.....

I left the my room and headed to the conservatory bar to check out who was
there after trying to find the Clayart room (not open yet) and see which
bourbon they had available (why go to KY if you don't try new bourbons!).
Several NCECA folks were there and as well as people without badges. I
walked up to Paul, introduced myself, and said to the gentleman with him "I
have a naked poster of you that you signed last year" From the look in his
face and the twinkle in Paul's eyes I knew I'd just made a major gaff.
Robin politely informed me I was mistaking him for Paul Soldner. As I was
turning several shades of red I offered the explanation that he'd looked so
familiar to me because I'd just finished reading "Making Marks" and that I
owned several of his books (4 to be exact- I looked later) and found them
to be very useful. He thanked me for the kind words and the conversation
went on from there. He took a rainckeck on my offer of a drink.

No mention of the ads or how they change..... just the autographed poster.
Which reminds me- anyone else notice Paul Soldner wasn't signing the
posters this year? Using an ink stamped chop and walking with a cane.

......(snip) I was sitting in the Galt House Hotel bar with Robin Hopper
when a lady came in and began to tell him how much she liked his work and
how she had admired him so much over the years. Then she went on to tell
him how much she like those ads of his in the magazines that were different
every month and showed all those people with no clothes on! She had
confused him with Paul Soldner! Robin was very gracious, and it was such a
treat to watch his face as the conversation went
along..........(snip)______________________________________________________

..... and the "Meeting Room Maze" was truly interesting. I'm not
surprised to hear of people having problems- the sign with the arrow did
help. The pedway was wonderful but confusing if you needed to pass through
the convention center and on to the Marriot for the Potter's Council
meeting at the ungodly hour of 7:00 a.m. on Friday. From the discussion
from the board members about the long, yet productive, board meeting I
ponder the question- "has there been any discussion of the board getting to
NCECA a day early and have a whole day if needed?" Maybe they could be
reimbursed for a hotel night's stay to cover expenses. And I was able to
find the "La Mesa" show as well. Wonderful pots to fondle and I got lost
in the colors & textures of Lisa Orr's pots. Nice to get to see them after
reading the Studio Potter about color.

......(snip) the Galt house was a lovely hotel, though kind of a maze..in
fact ,maybe because i got there in darkness and in the rain, i never quite
got my bearings in the hotel or in the conference center or in
between...or rather, i finallly got my bearings on the last day! one day i
swear it took me 30 minutes trying to figure out how to get OUT of the
conference hall and ONTO the correct pedway....definitely felt like i was
on the gerbil midway! (snip)......

Went to several openings, saw lots of great pots, lost a favorite earring.
Cyberclay was wonderful. Seemed to run into Lee Burningham everywhere-
great work in the K- 12 show. Got the t-shirt... and poster... and
catalogue. One of my roommates did a presentation for the K-12 forum.....
that was an adventure but I'll let her tell her own story. My husband is
now known at "the dog" to Linda Haibara- my other roommate. He sent me
flowers to the Galt even though I was going to be gone only 4 days and I
was calling him "the dirty dog" for spending the money. I stole some to
put in "Mel's Blue Bud Vase" then left them for Linda to take home (she had
driven from OH).

Just a word about roommates- I found both mine by posting to Clayart. We
covered the whole country- CA, OH, & NY. We were very different people,
did what we wanted, were not attached at the hip, and got along fine. They
say I didn't snore but we did have a suite and I noticed they DID close the
door. I'd presented each of them with a set of earplugs upon arrival but I
don't think they got used.

Did not find any takers for the extra bus tickets I had- remember I posted
I'd bought one of each in error. So I gave them away as I was wandering
around in the exhibit hall to people with "student" on their badges. Saw
one of them later- she had a good time.

The trip home was uneventful on Sat., except the flights were 100% full
with people trying to get home after the flight delays and cancellations
from the previous day or 2. I shared the flight to Baltimore with several
Clayarters. We had a great time looking at some old photo's in back issues
of Studio Potter. They bundled 2 issues as a "Function Pack" from June
1985 & Dec. 1989. Lots of pictures of younger Clayarters including Steven
Hill, Jonathan Kaplan, Paul Lewing, and a nifty article by Frank Boyden
about building the East Creek Anagama (in OR) with Niles Lou & Tom Coleman.

This has become way too long. See you in New Orleans- I'm hoping "the dog"
will be joining me.

Marcey Sherman
Zephyr Pottery...... who resigned the RN day job at the hospital before
going to NCECA. Working the last shift this Friday and then have to decide
what to do next. Potting.... Always.... more nursing?.... probably but I'm
done with hospitals for a while.

Naw, I think it was more that I have a grey beard much like Soldner and he
was jealous I was younger ;^)

I did notice several young women walking about the vendors hall with the
Soldner stamp on their upper chest.

Now I guess you'll want to know what I was doing staring at women's chests -
I was reading the Soldner stamp!

It's worse than you think, Bill -- he signed some of the
young women! (In at least one case, he also sealed her
with the red stamp.) If you'd just lifted your shirt, you
could have maybe gotten a lot more attention ...
