I started reading Paul's book on my flight home from
NCECA ....

Paul, you have written one fabulous book!
The photos are, as one would expect, completely drool
worthy
but even for those who may not think they have an
interest in China painting, think again ,
Paul has given us a wonderfully well written ,
thorough, engaging history , not only of china
painting but of porcelain , ceramic processes ,
history,terminology and so much more!

He examines in detail various terms and
definitions used throughout the centuries, in
different countries and by different segments of the
'clay' world.. it is one of the best compilations of
this info that i have seen,
This book is an enjoyably readable narrative as well
as a valuable technical resource, with good info ,
excellent descriptions and clear illustrations of
techniques and processes.
the sections on colorants, and materials are also
clearly written ,and enormously helpful, certainly for
all those working at lower temps, but I would think
would be of interest to all.

finally i just get goose bumps at how Paul finally
brings recognition to China painters in history and
working today, many of them women, who those outside
china painting may not be familiar with. The
artistry in the technique is undeniable , the range of
visual examples is comprehensive and varied. Paul's
mural work is lovely and often well utilized to
illustrate technique.
Also i like the quotes preceding each chapter, where
Paul's humor and love of his art come through..
And i see Fred Sweet's name on the credits. as one
who assisted in the proofreading and reviewing of the
drafts....among many others....

Paul, you have outdone yourself, this is a wonderful
resource and a
thoroughly enjoyable read. I can only imagine how
much research and work you put into it... but it has
paid off in a worthy ,attractive and useful book!
this is a real contribution to the field.
Thank you for this!!!!!

Thanks for that, Stephanie. That whole experience made this NCECA
really special for me, and I must admit I pretty much basked in the
praise for a few days. The reception for the book was very favorable
and I think we sold a bunch. I just announced it yesterday on the
china painter's equivalent of Clayart and orders have been rolling in.

I decided that if I was going to achieve my ultimate goal, which is a
revival of china painting in the US, it was necessary to accord equal
respect to both communities. China painters are afraid potters sneer
at them, and some do. But the overwhelming reaction I get at places
like NCECA to a serious book on china painting is "It's about time!"

Also i like the quotes preceding each chapter,
Here's my favorite. "We spend our days looking for the secret of
life. Well, the secret of life is art. I find it harder and harder
to live up to my blue china". Oscar Wilde

No kidding you see Fred's name on this! I would not have agreed to
even start on this if Fred had not agreed to help. He read every
word of every draft, and he's the kind of proofreader who checks
every letter, every number, every date, and every punctuation mark.
He's just as good at making sure you have the big picture covered and
have a consistent style as he is at making sure the tiny details are
right. He's also done "Soda, Clay, & Fire", "Mud to Music", Eppler's
glaze book, Baird's extruder book, and more. If anyone out there is
even considering writing a book, it would be a really smart move to
get Fred to help you with it.

By the way, you can order the book from ACerS at www.ceramics.org/
chinapaint, or from me at www'paullewingtile.com. You can also order
it from amazon, but why would you? And it should soon be in all the
ceramics stores.
