floating blue 'a' question

updated sat 5 may 07

Over a year ago we lost our floating blue cone 6
glaze for whatever reason. We have 2 or 3 recipe
variations but all we came up with was black,
despite thickness and temperature adjustments. As
a result I concocted a recipe (below) that does
work, providing you get it on thick enough and
fire it to a 'hot' cone 6. However, this glaze
settles FAST and HARD!! Anybody get me out of
this and still keep the floating blue?

FLOATING BLUE 'A':

Nephsey Syneite-----------43
Frit 3134-----------------33
Flint (silica)------------10
EPK-----------------------14
Rutile---------------------4
Iron Oxide-----------------2
Cobalte Carb---------------1
Bentonite------------------2

Hi Reg,

What kind of ball clay do you have - reforming with ball will help - and
adding some epsom salts - I'll explain.

I can reform without the neph sy as well if you would like to test it.

Hello Ron, Thanks for your kind offer. Yes,
please reformulate what I have if you can. I
don't know which ball clay I have-I didn't know
there were different kinds. I am looking forward
to see what you can come up with. --Reg

Hi Reg,

Find out which ball clay if you can - call your supplier - look on the bag
to see who made it and what it is.

I can do a better job if I know what kind.

Hi Reg,

Here it is with OM#4 - it should float better now but you might try also
using distilled or deionized water - your house water may be a contributing
factor.

I am also including my "best" floating blue conversion. It sounds like you
may have some contaminatered materials - I suggest doing a test of exch of
these with new materials - and the old recipe - to see if that is the case.
Yours with OM4 instead of EPK - don't forget the colours.

Neph Sy - 40.0
f3134 - 33.5
Silica - 6.5
OM#4 20.0
Bentonite - 2.0
Total - 102.0

My best FB revision - RR
>Frit 3278- 35.
>Neph sye- 8.
>Custer spar- 12.5
>Dolomite-6.
>Whiting- 2.
>EPK- 26.
>Silica-10.5
>total-100.
>Cobalt carb-2.
>Red iron oxide-2.
>Rutile-3.75 up to 4. it says do a line blend we use 3.75 works for us!

Ron, the ball clay I have is "OM4", and yes, I'd
like to have both formulations if you can.
