Seems like it was sodium silicate if I remember right. There should
be something in the archives about 9 months ago. I remember trying it
. Be sure and clean up while the mess on your wheel is still wet. If
it drys on you've got a problem.

Hello,

What is the technique for creating cracks by painting a sodium solution on the pot and heating the
surface with an acetyline torch called? What is in the sodium solution that is painted on pots? Can I
find instructions for this technique somewhere?

Clayart is a wonderful resource. Thank you!

Felicity - Found my notes from a workshop where this was demonstrated.
After forming pot, dry the bottom area a bit with torch. With wheel
turning slowly brush on 2 or 3 layers of sodium silicate. Leave bottom 2"
and top 2" uncoated. Dry the exterior of the pot slightly with torch.
Expand pot from inside. Cracks should appear right away. If not, dry a
little more. The effect can be highlighted by using contrasting colored
solium silicate slip. Try using 3/4 cup solium silicate, 2 tablespoon of
red iron oxide and 2 tablespoon of slip from your clay. Also try coloring
with 3 or 4 tablespoons of stain.

Hope this is what you're looking for. Good luck.
