nceca knitting corner

Well David...

I sure wish I was going to be there.

I've resumed knitting , crocheting and
weaving since I've had some health problems.

My Dad , a farmer, used to knit mittens for all 6 of
us kids in the winter.

Very soothing activity.
My specialty has become the "Martha" coming home poncho.

The knit version is wonderful, but the crochet
pattern can be made in an evening.

Poncho's are "hot" again, ....
(maybe earth tone glazes will regain popularity).

Good luck, and I hope the bypass went well.

There are amazing online resources for knitters and
crocheters,

Kathy

I have taken up the practice of knitting. Since major
gastric by-pass surgery in November 2005 I have been looking
for ways to stop snacking and for something to keep my hands
busy instead of holding a whiskey glass. Knitting has
allowed me to be at home instead of the studio, to be with
my family and at the same time be more productive than just
watching television. So I have knit a dozen or more hats
since January. It occurred to me this morning that there
may be some fellow kniiters among the clayart crowd. I am
ready to move beyond simple knit hats but could use a tutor.
I'll be in the clayart room often, and in the evening,
bottled water and knitting in hand. Anyone who wants to
join the knitting corner with me, I'd love the company. Any
one who wants to teach a very beginner about socks, I'll buy
you a drink.

See you next week
Dave

I sent David and off-list response, but you made a great point:

>>Very soothing activity.

Knitting and crocheting release serotonin. That's one of the happy-making
and claming hormones in your brain. It's also what's being replicated in
SSRI anti-depressants.

That's true. The only problem is that I got yarns all over the place
and kids are getting entangled in them as they walk by. They take a
life onto their own. Kathryn in NC

Wait until you start hiding the yarn from your husband. It's a sorry state
indeed. I have become positively addicted to luxury fiber. I am constantly
looking for ways to incorporate it into my clay work.

Forever a materials person...lo

I've skimmed over the knitting posts so I don't know if this was
mentioned... try socks. They are really fun, and you can get (or make) self patterning
sock yarn.

Lois, I'm curious where you got the idea that seratonin is being "replicated" in
SSRI medication. I'm not a doctor nor a pharmacist, but I'm more than fairly
sure that the "SRI" portion means "seratonin reuptake inhibitor". Such drugs
do not supply either "real" seratonin nor "replicated" seratonin. Simply put,
the drugs allow the seratonin produced in the brain to "linger" and remain available
in the synaps rather than to be immediately "taken up" in what is the brain's usual
process. Thus making better use of the what, in some people, is in short supply.

I would not have jumped on this were it not that I owe my life and what sanity I have
to SSRIs.
