cameras and canvas

Dear Clay Comrades,
For the past two years I have been using a Nikon Coolpix 5900 almost on
a daily basis and with good results. Nevertheless, I want to upgrade with
a new compact digital featuring a slimmer body, image stabalization, more
pixels and higher ISO. Any suggestions? When I log on to "reviews" I get
conflicting results. Are there any sites that give comprehensive
objective critiques on this type of camera?
I tried all over Topeka to find canvas heavy enough to use with a North
Star Slab Roller but to no avail. I found one website for the canvas but
the shipping was almost as much as the product. Suggestions?
Thanks for your help,
John Kudlacek,
Topeka, KS.
P.S. See you in Louisville.

Hey john,

Try an art supply and look for a good quality canvas for painting. They are not cheap but what is. You can also look at your local hardware store for a heavy duty drop cloth. I use them on my wedging table and they work pretty well.

John,

What will the primary job for this camera? Because the primary
job of my new camera is shooting pots, image stabilization and high
ISO speed was not too important, but closeup ability was.

If you like your Nikon and are used to how it works, you
can't go wrong with a newer model.

My Coolpix 5900 lens stuck and would not retract otherwise the camera
functioned normally. I brushed the lens tube thoroughly and after repeated
tries it retracted and closed normally. I guess it was dirt holding things
up. John

Hi Crew,

Well it looks like I'm in the market for another camera too. The Optio 60
finally took a crap, at least that's what it seems. I think it just might be
dirt crap but I'm not certain yet, and the fact I sure as hell shot a lot of
pictures, didn't I, ah? A while back I was getting a *lens error* but got it
to open from tools. Then the other day I did something that confused it with
the lens open and it went black. Now all I get is the Pentax logo on screen
for a second and black, with the lens stuck open. So it gets power but the
motor don't go. I've been told those cameras are too expensive to be worth
fixing so I been surfing the repair subject and learned a lot more about
cameras. Guess I didn't know much to begin with, ah! But now I have a couple
jammed cameras and I think there might be something to learning to fix them
myself. Wonder if I could con Voc. Rehab. to buy me the basic tools and some
training. Oh, I forgot, I don't qualify for S.S.D. and even my doctor said
they don't want to re-train me for anything. Guess I'll have to pay for it
myself, ah!

The Optio didn't have I.S. so I used a cheep W*M tripod a lot. From what I
read so far is there are a couple different ways I.S. is achieved but it can
be like high MP's, hype. I think I could live without I.S. unless it already
came with other features I certainly would want. Someone mentioned the glass
should be quality if possible, and I can appreciate lenses the size of a
half dollar but they tend to be less versatile, like no movie mode. One
feature I think I need for sure is lots of seals to keep dirt and moisture
out. I am not averse to other brands but Pentax has a 7mp waterproof model
that would be ideal for something to carry around. The last shots the Pentax
took were outside and we had snow flurries. If it ends up being a throwaway
at least the education was worth the couple hundred bucks.

I'm thinking of looking into whatever is gonna do the best for a range of
shooting conditions with a ltiile higher investment but I'm wondering what
software comes with these other popular brands. Seems Pentax and ACDSee have
a relationship so I assume toehr companies do the same. I also noticed W*M
don't carry Pentax anymore, neither does our ShopKo. Time to learn to shop

Ya John, I blew it out with air good but i think I'll set it aside and look
into other options. Learning to do repair might be good down the road after
I end up with a bunch of 'em ah. I need something that is gonna take a rough
ride so I'll wait on a DSLR especially since it seems one needs a bunch of
extra lenses to look professional. Some of the IS comes in the lenses and
some cameras have it inside the body as with the Pentax. I think I would be
satisfied with 7MP. I don't plan on doing any book publishing but can still
make poster sized prints through Fotki, once I figure out the stuff about
how pictures look on the monitor and how they print in ICC or sRGB and how
all that dots and pix per inch fits together. Even with my 6MP I could get
24x24 prints. Olympus has a 7.1 MP underwater that appears to work well too.
Maybe I'll make a decision by the end of the month and give myself a 5 year
anniversary gift ah! Maybe I'll get a beater and a DSLR with a telephoto
later. The weather will break soon and I wanna get to kiln building before
my lumbar gives out. Stay in there ah!
