kiln smoking up garage

updated wed 28 feb 07

This is the second time this has happened and I am beginning to worry
about my kiln. We have checked both the elements & wiring and it looks
fine.

I use an eletronic Skutt.

Clay: Laguna Dover White ^5

In bisque fire only (cone 04): When it is nearly finished - about 1900 it
starts smoking like it is on fire. White smoke comes out of the kiln and
fills up our garage! Yikes!

I have fired the kiln to ^5 and it does not smoke - only during the bisque
fire.

First time we thought some dust or maybe bugs were in kiln - no, no
residue. This time it is the same thing, kiln fires correctly, no errors;
bisque looks perfect, nothing on shelves, but lots of smoke in garage.

So...could it possibly be the clay??? When I unload the kiln my hands are
covered in white powder, but wouldn't this burn off at a lower temp
instead of the high? Or...if it is the clay why is it not doing this
during the cone 5 firing only the cone 04????

I'm confused & worried - don't know what is going on and I really don't
want to burn down the garage, 2 cars and of course all my work!!

Any suggestions on this??

Bunny,
You need a kiln vent.
The smoke is characteristic of
clays containing ball clay which
is high in organics.
These burn out in the bisque
so you don't see them at the cone
5 firing.
In the extreme, it is a nuisance that
can easily be solved with a kiln vent.

Bunny;

Are you leaving the top peep hole(s) open for venting??
