Hi Folks,
I'm specifically hoping to hear experiences and recommendations on using
castable in a sprung arch. One piece? Stress Joints? Sections?
Reinforcement? Standard Rise?
My span will be around 42" with a 7" thickness of homemade insulating
castable. I'm planning on some steel framing to support the arch as
well. The overall concept is to cast modular interlocking sections so
that the kiln could be moved at a later date. Any pointers would be
greatly appreciated.
TIA,
Robert

Dear Robert;

I have not used homemade castables, but have cast arches as thin as 1"
using stainless steel re-inforcing 'needles' in the mix. I covered the
castable shell with fiber for a very efficient design, though with such
construction one does need to contain the outward forces with some
steel. These kilns were fired to cone 11+, and some were salted also.
