using hard brick as posts with nitride bonded shelves

Greetings Clayarters,

I have just finished construction of a new kiln and have a few boxes of hard
bricks left. I was thinking of using the bricks cut in half length wise, as
kiln posts. I have heard of people having cracking issues with nitride
bonded shelves that was equated to uneven cooling. I would think unless the
kiln is a fast cooler, this should not be a problem. My kiln is a Nils Lou
design MFT. So walls and roof are 9 inches of IFB. The base of the cart and
kiln are hard brick. I'm anticipating it to be a reasonable slow cooler.

Any experience or opinions ?

Paul,

Write to Marshall Browne at Smith-Sharpe < marshall@ssfbs.com > about this.

There is also information about this on their web site:
http://www.kilnshelf.com
There's a couple of PDF's of articles about Advancer shelves

My conversation with him a short time back and in the article specifically
state NOT to use hardbrick as kiln posts. The stored heat from the brick and
cooling of the remainder of the shelf can lead to cracking in a normally
cooled kiln.

FYI - This information applies to the Advancer brand. Whether it applies to
other brands of nitride bonded shelves, you'll need to contact the supplier.

Hi Paul,

I've always used hard brick furniture - just cut em up with a hammer and
chisel and some sand - I'm now using them with advancers - no problem -
don't know how they will react with the cheap shelves.

I would advise you to get instructions from who ever sells you shelves -
seems to be an issue.
