a cheap alternative to expensive spray booths

Since the thread about spray booths and fans started, I took a walk through
our local Home Depot, and started thinking. (Always dangerous, I'll admit
)
Harbor Freight sells a dust collector system (6 inch tubing) with a squirrel
cage fan (for $229) capable of 1600 CFM. ( Laguna's 1/2HP fan is rated at
1515 CFM for their booth.)

Seems like a new "plain jane" 32 inch fiberglass shower stall (about $139
new from Home Depot) and one of those dust collector systems would do the
trick nicely, especially if you have a Home Depot nearby that can sell you
the HVAC grilles (PVC, easy to clean) to mount into the spraybooth/shower
stall (to which you connect the duct from the collector). All told, around
$400 builds you a nice one, all new.

For us scroungers out there (you listening David? ) a fan setup from an
old AC air handler (the CFM is listed on the label on the unit), a used
shower stall from a remodel or a few pieces of plywood, a few incidentals
like a roll of duct tape and some ducting (like old stove pipe) and you have
the same thing for much less than $100.

Free is good. Recycling is better. Finally convincing the partner WHY you
have to stop and pick through someone else's trash...priceless. (especially
if you offer your partner the money you're saving )

If I have an old 40 gallon water tank next to the firebox of my
kiln - free hot water, to shower off after a long day of stoking -
could I could combine it with a new shower-stall-spray booth?
"It's a spray booth.....it's a shower stall.....wait, there's more!"

The fans from old AC units are, indeed good air handlers
("squirrel cage" blowers). The only drawback is that they are
240 volt motors.

David:
As long as you can keep the water from the shower out of the fan, there is
no reason I can think of not to use it as both. It would certainly give one
an excuse for a foray into the wonderful world of creating extruded soap
dispensers. Built in display...how cool is that?
However....
do you want the excess sprayed glaze that will collect on the bottom and
sides of the booth going "down the drain"? I am assuming (based on what I
saw in your DVDs...excellent, BTW) that you're on a septic system? Don't
want that stuff clogging up the works killing off the little microbial
critters, etc. that keep everything digesting in there.

Also, in the spirit of modesty, you might want to add a shower curtain
unless "nekkid raku" means something else in Texas. Then too, once you're
done with your shower just flip that switch, and you're blow-dryin' in
style! Saves on towels .

Best,
Wayne Seidl

PS, don't you have 240 at your kiln? How else does one curl one's hair? :>)
