problems with local clay as a slip glaze

Thanks to those who advised me on ways to modify my local black clay
for use as a slip glaze: The problem was cracking and peeling off the bisque.

Most responses suggested that I calcine the clay. That would have
been problematic, however, because I don't have a ball mill to break
it up again. What worked was even simpler: I just sprayed it
on---which removed enough of the moisture to prevent the cracking and peeling.

The resulting glaze was not spectacular: a dull olive-green,
characteristic of a basalt mud, I think. Nevertheless, its a place to
start. My goal is to develop something interesting, using mainly
local materials, so my next step will be to add some wood ash to the mix.

-Please keep us posted about the wood ash project, becasue I'm doing
something similiar along the line. I think it's really exciting and
exhillerating to explore these elemnts. Best of luck! Kathryn in NC --

I missed the discussion, but having just collected some Katrina clay in New Orleans, adding 70% ball clay proved very successful in keeping the local slip from peeling off leather hard ware.
