Hi Eleanor,

I did the same. Gave them to Jenny's new store in Rochester. What I really
wanted to do is to wish you also a happy and healthy New Year. Looking
forward to seeing you at Sunapee next summer.

Another alternative is to scan in the old copies. I have been scanning in
all my ceramic subscriptions for years. With the CDs available from CM and
CT, I have digital copies to reference since the beginnings. As you may know
the companies offer old copies on CD usually about 10 years or more old. If
the companies made copies available as each year ends, I would keep the more
recent copies available only until my CD arrived. What I particularly like
is that I can do word, author or topical searches. I have an HP 8250
scanner, the associated soft ware allows me to select the format which I
want the scanned imaged saved. I save it in an editable PDF format which
allows word searches; as an aside, this format allows the article to be read
to me. Adobe professional [and maybe some of the lesser Abobe products]
allows you to select whatever is showing on the screen and having it read. A
while ago I didn't particularly care for the computer voices - monotones and
all that; about a year ago, I found some advanced AT&T voices that are
wonderful and that can be imported into Adobe replacing their standard
voices. They [AT&T] have an array of voices with various accents and
inflections including English, Indian and U.S. - male and female. Voice
technology has really gone a long way. These voice are nearly as good as
human.

As another aside, I have about 2,000 books that I have scanned or downloaded
and digitalized and converted to the PDF format. The scanner that I
mentioned is a duplex scanner meaning it scans both sides in one pass. Now
whenever, I purchase a book or wish to scan a CM magazine, I tear them apart
and place the pages in the paper feed of the scanner; I can place about 50
pages at a time in the scanner and considering it does both sides that is
about 100 pages of printed material. The scanner does about 40 pages a
minute in black and white and I would guess about 15-20 color pages. After
placing the pages in the paper feed, I then go about my business and vola
it's done and all I have to do is save the file. Anything that can be
digitalized - typed can be converted and read to you.

A wonderful website for those of you liking to read or be read to is the
following: http://digital.library.upenn.edu/books/ . This is the Gutenberg
Project. There are approximately 25,000 books free to download on this site.
The Project is a group of Universities and private parties that are
assiduously scanning in books that are no longer copyrighted and making them
free on the internet. Virtually all of the old classics are available free.
I have over the years all the Russian novels, Shakespeare etc. etc.
downloaded.

Now for those of you not liking the idea of reading off a computer, I have a
table PC among others that weighs just a few pounds and when folded down is
about the size of a yellow pad. I carry it everywhere even out into my
studio where it can read to me while I am working. It is also great in bed
at night when my wife wishes to sleep because I can read in the dark and not
disturb her. The wonderful thing is that whenever I travel I can carry my
complete library, portfolio and digital pictures with me.

Still thinking about NCECA.

Tom,

Can you pass on the name of your scanner?
Was it originally sold as a medical scanner?

Thanks,
Kathy
