elemental embarasment: mirrors without smoke

Well, my dears, it turns out that my element problems, which led to last
week's query about checking ohms,
was totally groundless.

Nevertheless, de tout coeur, I thank the several who offered advice on how
to check ohms safely.

Today I armed myself with tools, and went to check the kiln. What was wrong
was that the lowest element (there are 3) was not working! Aha!

First I checked the inside. I did this using a mirror because it made it so
much easier. The element was whole. I then approached the switch..and saw
that the bottom plug (which plugs into the one above) had disengaged itself.
Plugged it in,
put a firebrick underneath so it will not come out again, et voila!

About mirrors. I too have problems looking into the peep hole--because it
requires sort of squatting, kneeling, and that does not work well. I have
learned that I can see my cones by using a mirror...In fact they appear very
clearly.

Now: The little cages around the switches are brittle and nasty--from steam
etc. I do not see them for sale.,...any ideas
how I either eliminate them entirely, or replace?

Again the idea is NOT to electrocute myself....
