I have just replaced the switches on a Scutt 1227-240 but the top element does not work on low or
medium but hums nicely on high. Any suggestions? RLH

1. New switch is bad.

2. Incorrect wiring.
Open the panel and compare location of wires to other switches that are
operating correctly.

This is the kiln that I use.

For the sake of avoiding confusion, the skutt 1227 kiln does not have
infinite control switches. Instead it has three 3 position switches,
each
of which controls two elements. At medium power only the lower
element of each set is on, so the top element will never be on at the
medium setting. All the elements are on at low and at high, but at low
they get less current. New elements can be almost silent, and you
have to listen really closely to be sure they are on.

Try turning all the elements to high and see if they get red.
