flattening bats

it is good to take all of your bats on occasion,
dampen them.
make a stack on a flat floor and put a concrete block ( or a hundred pounds
of clay.)
on top of the entire group. plastic, masonite, hardiboard,
wood, particle board. does no good to put the plaster ones in the mess.

let them sit there for a few days.
then, turn them over and do the same thing.

it just sort of gets them all flat again.

i have bats of every description...fifty years worth.
i really don't mind when, or how i use them.
just flat...most wiggle a bit on the wheel.
but, who cares.
just ignore it.

Mel:

The problem I've had is when trimming a short foot ring it turns out
longer on one side and shorter on the other (where the wobble lifts the
bowl).

I'll try stacking and weighting them. Can't hurt...

Fred

You could also put a slop of clay on the wheel on the side that is
flopping. When I was working in an open studio, the bats weren't the
best but you could put clay down where it's wonked (pottery term?) and
that will help even it out. I learned that several years ago and it
works when it's needed.

Would love to hear how you make out on the wetting and stacking trial.
I may try it just because it sounds like it will straighten any warping
that I just don't notice.
