Hi Arnold,
While dealing with my leaking vase problems, I came to discover my kiln w=
as not reaching temperature so I went back and checked the last time I ha=
d it rewired. I found it was June 2003 and I had done 138 firing so deci=
ded it was time to have it done. I have a Skutt 1027 with a wall compute=
r. (I also have a Skutt 1227 and my husband has fixed it so I can move t=
he computer from one kiln to the other)
My question is: After Charley rewires the 1027, I seem to remember that =
I need to fire it one time empty, is this true? I fire to cone 04 and co=
ne 10. What temperature would I fire the empty kiln to? Thank you for y=
our help.
Barbara

The first firing with new elements serves to allow the elements to settle in
place and to produce a protective oxidized layer on them.

A slow firing to ^5-^6 would probably suffice.

I would suggest this would be the time to get into the habit of including
witness cones in EVERY firing.

It is a good idea to fire the kiln empty for the first time
after you change the elements. (But it is not essential.)
Paragon recommends firing the empty kiln to cone 01.

You also mentioned that the kiln wasn't firing to the
correct temperature. Did you solve that problem?
