I have just been perusing http://www.youtube.com. Did a search for
pottery and came up with all kinds of video demos of throwing cylinders,
raku firings, salt firings, slab building, etc, etc. It's well worth a
visit.

Hi Folks,
The recent mentions of YouTube.com have reminded me of the few minutes
of video I shot two years ago when Valice Raffi and I visited Mata Ortiz.
Accordingly, I've put them on the site for all to see. Here are the links:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=wx7G-y4lMeM Ana Trillo (less than a minute)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=MKVtuAGrtR4 Jorge Quintana (over 6 minutes)

These may try your patience over a dial-up connection; they sure did mine.
The shorter of them didn't take very long, the longer one quite awhile.

The potters shown, Jorge Quintana and Ana Trillo (hope I've spelled
their names correctly) explained as they worked with practiced ease.
These videos are silent; they try to show the simplicity
with which the pots are formed using only very simple tools and
the potters' skilled hands. I wish I'd been able to show the firing
techniques and the meticulous work that goes into decorating them.
Guess that's an excuse for another trip.

Enjoy,

Don Goodrich in chilly Zion, Illinois

Regards,
Maurice, in Fairfax, California, where on this afternoon's hike
around "our" lake, Celia and I saw an Osprey scoop up a fairly hefty
Rainbow Trout. He made a few laps of the cove near us then landed
near the top of a snag about 100 feet away. Then the fun began.

A few Crows watching started squawking like mad. Within about
fifteen seconds, twenty or thirty others picked up the cacophony and
began converging on the snag where the Osprey was trying enjoy his
hard-earned meal.

The Crows continued their cawing as a few of them took turns trying
to intimidate the Osprey with mock dive-bombing missions, but aside
from a few feather-rufflings, the Osprey was unfazed.

Within two minutes at least 200, probably more Crows had joined in
the fruitless spectator sport. Ospreys apparently don't mind eating
with a noisy audience.

Life is good.

Even if YouTube (uhhh... Google) took all Daily Show and Colbert
away. Happily, Fox News doesn't mind that Clinton's performance on
Chris Wallace's show is there.

Catherine,
I've had that problem with things that play on Real Player too.
There's been an enormous amount of fuss about copyrights in recent
years, and what we're seeing may be the result of that. If you
don't find anything in your temporary interney files that looks like
the video you've been watching, it may not be possible.

Good luck,
Don

Catherine,

It's not you, it's that Windows Media Player (and most other media
players, too) are not designed to save the media they can play back;
ostensibly for copyright reasons. There are some programs around that
can do it (of course), but I don't use Windows, and the only thing I
can think of is an extension (add-on) for Firefox (an Open Source web
browser, that among other things, is more secure than Internet
Explorer) that allows downloading of online media in addition to
playback.

Output it through a device like a TV card or video card that will output
to SVHS and capture it while it is playing live onto a secondary device
like VHS or DVR. I do that with NPR onto cassette tape so I can listen
to it later and especially to hear Frank Deford's essays. (I know I
could use podcasts, but my daughter won't let me use her Ipod.)

Catherine-

Nothing to it: set up a youtube account and add your favorite vids to
your "favorites" at youtube. No need to tie up space on your hard
drive.

You can download an flv player as an extension on Firefox. You will have to
change the file extension to .flv once you download it but it is very easy
to use.
