I have had a lot of experience with the glaze John posted below. I call it
Penland Red/Orange as I got it from an article in Clay Times by Lana Wilson
and Kate Magruder. They had done extensive glaze tests at Penland. Use
Purple Crocus Martis instead of red iron oxide. (this is important) I used
Kona F4 instead of G-200. Make sure you apply the glaze a little thicker
than you normally do, not too thick though. And fire it in a slow fire/slow
cool or you will get a really flat boring orange. (also very important) This
is a very reliable glaze and is beautiful. The darker the clay, the richer
the color but works on just about anything. It will break black on texture.
Once I found this I never went back to any of the other iron reds. Rhodes
Rutile layers over this with great results.
It is an old article which I scanned so if anyone would like it, just email
me off list.

Just in case some of you care - this glaze is way short of both alumina and
silica.

I would not recommend using it as a liner glaze. Try it with a slice of
lemon on it over night to see if it changes.

Probably not a good idea for soap dishes either.
