Dear Clayarters, I need an underglaze recipe for ^10. I do not have too much
time to do tests, but I am considering mason stain, a high fire fritt and
cmc mixed together. I will appreciate any suggestions or available recipe
please. Thanks.

Hi Antoinette,

I got this underglaze from a Sylvie Granetelli workshop. She uses it on ^10 porcelain I use it on ^6 white stoneware. Just don't touch the underglaze after you apply it unless you want to have a smeared or a faded look . Even after bisque firing if you apply it on greenware. you should spray on the glaze over the design.

For Greenware
Frit 3110
EPK
Mason stain
Equal parts by weight

For Bisque
Frit 3110
Neph. Sy.
Mason stain
Equal parts by weight

Mix & run through an 80 mesh screen and add to enough water to get a heavy cream conststancy although you can play with the amount of water a bit . If you get it too thin the color will disappear. If too thick you'll get a lizard skin effect.
You can see examples on my website www.audeostudios.com under "Hollywood Inspirations" Now, I also have an overglaze you might like.

Overglaze
Mason stain ..... One level Tablespoon
Frit 3134............One level teaspoon
Bentonite...........One level teaspoon

The Overglaze is a tad easier to work with. but does smear a bit as well. I went to the dollar store & picked up a measuring spoon set to make the overglaze. I have brushed & airbrushed all of these . BTW, ALL the recipes settle very fast so stir & shake OFTEN. Please feel free to give me a call if you have any questions (509) 469-6966 I don't know how reds & pinks will work in ^10 since I fire to ^6. I use empty water or soda bottles to store this stuff . the caps are tight so you can really shake them up before using them & you can use a sharpie to mark the bottles.
I hope this helps! Good luck!!

Dear Antoinette,

You are on the right track as to your mixture of Mason Stain, frit and =
CMC.
I have a large shard near me when I am decorating my pots. I pass the =
brush
on the shard so that it gives a slightly watercolor transparency to the
mark. I even made a palette showing all of my colors in the method I =
want
to use them so I can see how thick and thin responds to my cover glaze.
Does your cover glaze have an opacifier in it so that the Stain has to =
bleed
through? Then I would suggest that the painting should be a little =
heavier
or the frit increased to make sure the stain melts carrying the color
through the opaque cover glaze. But if you are using a clear glaze, I =
think
it is a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) result. =20

Good luck.
