black sand on beaches

Some 5 years ago, or maybe longer, Michael Banks wrote a lot about this and the types of minerals etc you could expect to retrieve from black layers on sandy beaches. I imagine this letter is in the clayart archives somewhere. His actually wrote a lot about coastal and other geology which was always interesting and relevant to pottery. Sadly we haven't heard from him for a long time, nor from many of the other New Zealanders who also used to write frequently.

Now I come to think about it, they disappeared at about the same time as The Lord of the Rings was filmed in their beautiful country.
