Dear Friends,
In an article in the recent PMI (J/A 2006) Jeff Zamek explained that =
early reduction in a fuel fired kiln can lead to the formation of an =
unstable carbon bond between the clay and the glaze.
I have not heard of Carbon bonding to either clay or glaze though I do =
know that soot can form if reduction is excessive and there is =
insufficient heat and air to cause it to burn away. I also know that =
Graphite is often used with clay to make refractory crucibles. These =
tend to be unaffected by the fluxes used to prevent molten metal from =
oxidising because the molten flux does not wet the graphite surface.
Does anyone know what this carbon bond is all about ?
Best regards,
Ivor Lewis.
