Looks new, Central or South American reproduction. Nice piece.

Can anyone tell me anything about this piece? Here's the link to the
pictures. I hope it works.

I found it at an antique store in Delray Beach, Florida while I was on
vacation. I liked it so I got it even though it was kind of scratched and
nicked. Now I'm wondering what it could be. Old? New? Who could have made
it? What should I look for? I can tell it's burnished slip and decorated
with additional slips. I happened to be looking through a Potter's Handbook
that I have and saw something similar in the "Ceramics of the World"
section. Now my interest in what it really is has peaked. Anyone
knowledgeable about Indian/Primitive pottery? Any information would be
apprecitated.

Happy potting,
Crystal

It looks like its andean (from the andes mountains in south america),
probably inca or a related group, from the last few centuries before the
Spanish conquest. Its remotely possible its a modern copy, but if so its
a really good one.

I should have stated in my first message the jar I saw in the book that it
is similar to is an Inca aryballoid jar circa 1438-1832. Earthenware with
slip decoration and is 8 1/4" tall. Says it's at the Museum of Primitive
Art in New York which I also read has closed. I've been looking up
information on the internet that says they are usually rather large which
makes me wonder why this one in the museum is so small. Mine is about 6"
tall. I do think it is inca. I did find a few things on the internet that
the design looks so similar. I found a picture of a scupture from Peru that
was of a person with one of these (similar) strapped to it's back. I was
thinking that it could be part of a two piece sculpture. ??

I feel the same way. If it is a copy it's ok because it is a nice thing.
Thanks for your input.

Thanks for your reply. Maybe I should google Central and South American
reproductions. You gave me an idea.
