Hello, Clayarters. I am a potter from Oklahoma who will be touring the
Northeastern U.S. July 22-28, 2006. I would like to visit as many
potteries and galleries as possible. I will fly into Hartford, CT, and
want to get as far north as Maine and as far east as Cape Cod. I am
also interested in arts festivals and fairs that would have pottery. I
would appreciate any recommendations and suggestions regarding where to
go (and how to get there).

Dear Pat,

When you get to New Hampshire be sure to visit the Concord headquarters of
the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen which is the oldest craft association
in the country. There you will get all the information you will need about
New Hampshire potters which includes some who are quite famous. Also, if you
are here in early August you can visit the League crafts fair which is also
the oldest craft fair in the nation. It begins on the first Saturday in
August and runs for 9 days. It is held at the Sunapee Lake state park.
Although I am not famous I have been potting here for about 40 years and I
would be happy for you to visit me. Let me know what your schedule is and I
will be glad to send you my address.

Pat,

If you are up in these general parts, you should stop by the Pucker
Gallery in Boston. It is on Newbury Street (the gallery district) and has
some of the best claywork shown in the area.

Make sure to ask to see the rooms upstairs... that is where a lot of stuff
is. They handle folks like Hamada Shoji, Shimaoka Tatsuzo, Matsuzaki Ken,
Warren Mckenzie, Rhil Rogers, Brother Thomas, and so on. They also hava a
great collecgtion of African pottery.

I think a Matsuzaki Ken exhibition will be in the main downstairs gallery
then. It opens mid June.

As Debbie said, stop by the Leage of New Hampshire Craftsmen's
headquarters in Concord, New Hampshire....and try to catch the numerous
League shops in various places.

Portsmouth, NH has a great arts community and is a nice city right on the
coast.

Maybe stop by the ceramics department at the New Hampshire Institute of
Art on Amherst Street in Manchester (http://nhia.edu). (I am adjunct
faculty there.) It will be in summer session by then, but there might be
some people around to talk to and direct you to others in the area. Gerry
Williams studio is in Goffstown not to far away from there. Debbie Grant
would be a great hostess to "make connections" for you here in NH. She
was the department chair of the NH Institute program for MANY years.

I'd love to welcome you to my studio here in NH, (been here for 29 years)
but at that point I will be in an artist-in-residence program over in
Japan again.

I'm sure that you will get many "tips" for places to go. Have fun
planning your trip.

best,

Hi Pat Travis,
When you are in Maine and if you want to leave the coast, or if you want to
visit the Mt. Washington area of NH, come visit us in the beautiful
foothills of western Maine. We have had our pottery and showroom in Bethel
for 32 years. Bethel is on Rt. 2 which is one of the main roads running east
to west.
If you call first we will try to be here personally to show you around.
Sincerely,
Garret Bonnema
