It's often not practical to use a step-down
transformer for a kiln. Also, there's power loss
through the transformer.

Complete rewiring is often cheaper, besides.

As for your 'dryer plug' kiln, remember most
dryer plugs in the US put out 240 v. It may
require very little modification to run on
'native' 220 - possibly just a different plug,
though maybe a rewiring to deal with a neutral
line issue. Possible issues include if your kiln
uses a 120 line for something (like the
controller) and, in some cases, switching to a
new set of elements (might not be necessary -- it
depends).

Check with your kiln manufacturer for
confirmation. Most kiln manufacturers offer most
of their basic models for different viltage
setups, number of phases, etc.

The angel lay in a little thicket. It had no need of love; there was nothing anywhere in the world could startle it ...

Hi everybody,
I have a question about kilns and rewiring
I have two small kilns one a test kiln with cone sitter, the other is a small glass kiln with pyrometer
With my family situation rapidly going to a big change I am playing with the idea to move to an other country, probably in Europe. I went to the local 220 store where I fund a very knowledgeable manager who strongly (even tougher against his interest) recommended me not to buy a transaformator but to buy new kilns (only I am really fund of my two small kilns) Strangely enough I would have way less trouble –he said- with my “big” kiln (3.3 and it works from the dryer plug)
I am thinking of asking someone to rewire the whole thing for 220.
Any constructive Idea would be truly appreciated
