slump-hump?????

I purchased the slump hump mold system for making platters, made a mold of
plaster and after the mold had dried I attempted to make a platter. Made the
platter without much problem added on a foot ring and let it dry.

I put the platter in the bisque and the foot ring popped off all in one
piece, just popped off. So I think it must not have been bone dry, I make
another platter, let it dry for 2 weeks load it in the kiln. Same thing the
add on foot ring just pops right off the platter.

So I think what's going on here. I then make another platter, this time I
score and slip the foot ring when it is added onto the platter and then I
let it dry one month. Loaded it in the kiln, at this point I think I have
this problem fixed.

This morning I opened the kiln and guess what the foot ring has popped off.

Any one using the slump hump system??? Or does any one have any ideas as to
what would be the cause of this???

I had the same experience with a handle I attached to the top of a
lid. I thought it was because I got some air under the handle when I
applied it to the lid. "It just popped off" for me, too! Did not
crack or break--I re-applied it and glazed it--it held.

The plaster hump is wicking so much moisture down and
through the clay, that the distance between the foot
ring and the base is long enough to make the foot ring
dry at an extremely different rate during the time the
piece is still on the hump.

so you should remove it off the hump mold as soon as
you get the foot ring on. That means you need a
receiving hump that is not made of plaster to hold the
form while the foot ring sets up for you to turn it
over onto that.

I piece of flexible syrofoam will do. And just go
ahead and dry it. Unless it is remarkably thick, it
doesn't need all that time.

I am not one for long drying time, and so I would
dispense with the days and weeks waiting and just go
ahead and dry it. Obviously, the long drying time is
not working for you, so try this instead.
