extruders - my take on the north star

I routinely monitor Clayart for mention of North Star products. Oftentimes
I reply to posts off-list. However, I would like to issue this reply hoping
it will be of general benefit to those who use North Star extruders.

CLEANING A SQUARE BARREL EXTRUDER: After making the final extrusion for the
day, lift the plunger out of the barrel and prop it on the edge of the
barrel. This keeps it and the handle out of the way while cleaning. If the
clay plug comes out with it, pick it off for re-use. Remove the die holder
and pull down on the die to remove it from the barrel. Let the clay on the
inside of the barrel dry overnight. The next day spray the dried clay with
water from a spray bottle. It will soften very quickly and can be wiped out
with a sponge.

CLEANING THE PLUNGER PLATE: One way to conveniently clean the plunger plate
is to rest the plunger handle on your shoulder. This allows two-handed
access to the plunger arm and plate for cleaning. After cleaning, check to
see that the plunger plate is firmly attached to the arm. If not, tighten
with a small wrench.

ADJUSTABLE vs. FIXED PIVOT PLUNGER ARMS: North Star designed the fixed
pivot plunger assembly over thirty years ago because the shackle on older
designs was prone to slipping and the user could get hit on the head with
the handle. Using any extruder safely and proficiently requires some
practice and patience to learn its idiosyncracies. Never use an extruder
that has worn or damaged parts.

CHANGING DIES ON THE NORTH STAR: Admittedly, this does require some
finesse. For solid-shape dies we recommend attaching the die holder with
the two bolts first. Slide the die plate in afterward then tighten the
bolts. For hollow-shape dies, assemble the die, rest it on the die holder
then position this assembly so you can insert the first bolt. Then start
the second bolt and tighten both bolts evenly.

Tips: 1. Keep the bolts and lug threads clean and lightly lubricated. 2.
Keep the bolts and the hex wrench within easy reach of your extruder. 3. Be
patient. Even can openers and corkscrews can be frustrating if you don't
use either very often.
