Dear Lili,
Muffle Kilns; how are these classified and where do they fit in with =
current practice. Good question.
I recall seeing somewhere long ago an illustration of a Muffle Kiln =
where flue tubes ran up the inside of the muffle chamber. No doubt they =
got hot and acted like radiating elements. I do not have access to a =
copy but there is probably something in Singer and Singer "Industrial =
Ceramics" about this. Being enclosed, sealed and without any form of =
external aspiration they no doubt fit into the "Neutral" division.
I suppose they will fit in to the scheme of things as a style of Sager =
Firing. Many people use saggars as an enclosed space for several =
reasons. Atmospheric modification is just one use. Keeping stuff clean =
is another. I can see saggars as a way of getting an oxygen enriched =
atmosphere. Something I must try!
Enjoy your week. Best regards,
Ivor

One of my first experiences in Art College was to take a hammer and break
out all the ceramic tubes in a muffle kiln - so we could fire reduction.

Those tubes isolated the ware from any contact with flame or any reducing
atmosphere - in other words - oxidation firing in a gas kiln. Like a sager
- except the whole stacking space was "safe" from the fire.

I can remember asking the instructor - "are you sure you want me to do this?"

There was sure no way the damage could be undone.
