majolica glaze problems

hello,
I am a beginner in the majolica technique. I attended a small workshop where we painted on a majolica tile, that already had the glaze applied. The tiles ended up to be beautiful.

I am trying it on my own now and not on just a flat tile surface and I am having difficulty trying to apply the glaze with out experiencing drips. I wash of the surface of the bisque piece prior to dipping in the glaze as recommended. I dipped the pieces in the glaze and ended up with drips and tiny holes. I sanded the surface but found the glaze chipping off the edges.

I sprayed the glaze and the surface ended up with a very bumpy feel which was difficult to smooth. I tried painting the majolica glaze on, but besides being tedious it certainly wasn't smooth.

I am using Linda Arbuckle's recipe for majolica. She says that I may need to add 1-3 Tblsps. epsoms salts to the glaze, will this aid in the application? How do I know when I have added enough? I know that the epsoms salts is a flocculant, but my glaze doesn't seem to be settling in the bucket. I have worked in ceramics now for 10 years and this is making me crazy, can any one out there help.

thanks
christine

Christine,

In my Majolica style work, I add 1/4 of 1% CMC to my glaze, (dry mixing =
it
in with one of the other ingredients before putting into hot water) =
which
makes a very hard smooth glaze on which to paint the colors. I also get
drips, but I work with them, using a fettling knife to scrape them down =
and
my glaze also smoothes out in the firing. The CMC makes the glaze very =
hard
so that it is not powdery and accepts the colors easily.

If you have any other questions, just drop me a line.

Hello Christine,

I am also a beginner but these are suggestion others have given me, so I am
passing them along. Mix your glazes really well. I use a paint mixer I
bought from a hardware store with a drill, but small amount you could use a
hand mixer from the food department. If you do, don't use this mixer for
mixing food again. Mix it at least 5 to 10 minutes on high speed this will
insure that the glaze is mixed well. Then sleeve it several times. Next,
if you have pin holes in the glaze after you dip the tile in the glaze,
rubbing the glaze with you finger tips will work some glaze into the pin
holes and will solve your problem. I have noticed that sometimes air
bubbles in the glaze will cause this. The settling problem can be remedied
by add 2% bentonite. This worked for me when other clayartist recommended
it to me when I had similar problems. One thing is that it will cause the
glaze to be thicker. Since it is thicker it might also solve your drip
problem. You can also rub the glaze on the drip with your finger tips and
this will smooth out the drip with out leaving the marks after firing. (Wait
till it is completely dry.) This may cause some glaze dust so either wear
a respirator or put a fan blowing against the back of your head blowing out
of the room and preferably outside. Good luck I hope this will help you .
