It should be just holding the gate in place. The idea is, when the cone
bends, the gate should drop right away.

Of course, each kiln sitter will work a little differently--you will
have to adjust the gate so it drops when it reaches temperature
(according to witness cones), not under or overfire, and you will
probably have to adjust it a few times before you know what is right on
your kiln.

Hi All,

I have a question. I have one of those little template discs that fit
over the cone supports and the trip rod fits through. Once done I assume one
is to adjust the trip height of the metal insert in the drop weight to have the
kiln shut off at the proper temperature. Is the adjustment a matter of using
witness cones and adjusting up or down on the metal tab or is there a
prescribed way to do this to begin with?

Thanks Gang,

If you run across Arnold Howard of Paragon Kilns in one of his visits to the
list here, thank him for putting up a pdf of the Dawson Kiln Sitter
instruction manual on their website.

http://www.paragonweb.com/files/manuals/Kiln-Sitter%20Models%20P%20&%20K%20Operating%20Manual.pdf

Be aware that there are several models with different instruction manuals so
this one may not be your model. However, the instructions for adjusting the
claw and drop weight are the same. (If yours is the other model, you can
come into the www.paragonweb.com site through the home page and then
navigate down through the support menu to get the other pdf file for your
model...)

Gary!
Insert the "key" into the KSTA on the inside of the kiln . Then
adjust the sliding weight of the drop down weight so that it clears
the trip hook by just a tiny bit. You've just adjusted the kiln
sitter. The kiln sitter is purely mechanical. As for cones and
temperature, you need a pyrometer for that!

Also, we have a general "Repair and Maintenance of the Kiln-Sitter"
hosted on our site. Its listed under the firing tips section.
