Surfing with Helen Bates - March 21, 2006 - Mostly USA

Ian Anderson (Ianworks Design) (Westbrook, ME, USA)
http://www.ianworks.com/
(MFA show entitled "M3: Monument, Message, Materialism" using handmade
tiles, and slip-cast bowls. Surface treatment includes relief letters and
ceramic decals) (Earlier work was not entirely political but the progression
in that direction goes as far back as 2001.)

(Anderson now teaches undergraduate ceramics at Maine College of Art.)

Ben Owen (Signature Shop, Atlanta, GA, USA)
http://www.thesignatureshop.com/mdpgs_N_CLOwenB/OwenB_06.html
(Some fine vessels by Ben are on view.)

(See also work by Glen Dair, Stephen Hawks, Shane Mickey, Michael Schmidt,
and Sandy Simon.)

Troy Schmidt (Red Dragon Pottery) (Santa Barbara, CA, USA)
http://members.aol.com/reddragonpottery/
(Delicate porcelain miniature vessels thrown on a regular-sized potter's
wheel to a 1-inch scale, and normal-sized functional and decorative
stoneware with carved celtic designs.)

Amy Bower and Ralph Scala (Santa Fe, NM, USA)
http://www.santafepottery.com/Categories.bok?$catalog.Oem=Amy+Bower
(Bower and Scala collaborate in making functional wheel-thrown earthenware
pottery with a contemporary look. Formed by Scala, they are individually
hand-decorated by Bower, whose use of vivid colors and rich textural
approach makes for a good-looking product.)
Bower's / Scala's work at the American Craft Council: Baltimore Wholesale
Market 2005 website:

Ellis, Melody (Born in Scotland; lives in Edwardsville, IL, USA)
http://www.melodyellisceramics.com/
(Ellis's work using earthenware tiles and figures explores social behavior
and the natural world through human and animal imagery. Some of her
inspiration is rooted in morality tales and narrative art forms found in
Italian majolica and medieval stained glass as well as more modern objects
such as antique dolls, handmade wooden toys, and other "aging curiosities.")
