adding aquarium gravel to a glaze

Hi Clayarters,

I know the thread has gone around about adding pieces of glass or
stained glass to a glaze firing. I've tried it. I'm not sure what aquarium gravels
may be made out of, but has anyone ever tried it in a glaze firing?

Thanks gang,

There is a big difference in aquarium gravel and aquarium sand...the sand
would be silica....But, the gravel could have a number of elements
incorportated.. I have seen gravel mixed into the clay-- and then glazed -- and it
remained the gravel... No visible change......

I used to work with a sand/gravel operation in southern Ohio that sold silica pebbles (nearly 100%) to a company that put epoxy coating on the silica pebbles for aquarium gravel. That silica was from the Sharon Silica deposit, and was pure stuff.

When I was in Denmark in the late 80's, I met a very interesting potter who
added the gravel from his driveway to some of his glaze which gave a three
dimensional aspect to the glaze on the bowl. He depicted the sea and shore
abstractly and added the gravel to the white glaze, looking like the surf..
