Out of curiosity I sought out Alka Seltzer on the supermarket shelves =
last week. Very informative. I read on the outside f the box "Active =
Ingredient, Asprin" Not wishing for the headache of opening a box and =
having to pay for a sample I did not break the seal to read the enclosed =
MSDS.
Asprin is Acetylsalycilic acid. Its constituent elements are Carbon, =
Oxygen and Hydrogen. It will just melt then burn away and should have no =
effect on clay or glaze.
I believe A S is a water soluble and effervesces. This suggests that the =
filler, to make the tablet weight, would be Citric Acid, also purely =
organic and Sodium Carbonate. The latter compound melts at about 850 deg =
C and vigorously attacks free Silica.
Half a pound of Soda would cost a far less that a box of A S.
Best regards,
Ivor Lewis.

Ivor -- When all else fails I always read the directions. Or, in this case,
the box. The orginal ref I believe was to "Alka Seltzer Gold" the box for
which states it contains --

Heat treated sodium bicarbonate 1050 mg
• Citric acid 1000 mg
• Alka-Seltzer® Gold contains principally the antacids sodium citrate and potassium citrate.
• Potassium Bicarbonate 344 mg

But under 'inert ingredients lists also mannitol and magnesium stearate.

Mannitol is yet another of those sugar alcohols, and will burn off (likely
completely) in a firing, but magnesium stearate is interesting in that it
melts at an extremely low temp (90 C) and while it has relatively little
Mg by weight (the formula is C36 H70 Mg O4) that early melt temp may
get the Mg active fairly early. I also don't know how much an A-S dose
weighs, so I can't even guesstimate the concentration of Mg, but it might
be an interesting ingredient to tinker with.

Best wishes -- Steve Slatin
