chimney for oil barrel wood fire kiln

Hello everyone,
I am helping build a downdraft wood fire, oil barrel kiln from the book Alternative Kiln Firing Techniques, (Sorry, do not have author name with me) right now we are contemplateing buying the chimney which is an 8" in diameter steel pipe. Should we go with a double walled pipe or save money and buy single walled. I guess the advantage to double wall is insulation but I do not understand why it is necessary to insulate the chimney. I have access to corogated sheets of galvanized steel roofing material and have been thinking about rolling it up and welding it into an 8" by 4' cilinder.
Thanks for your thoughts,
Sam J

Sam,

_Alternative kilns & firing techniques : raku, saggar, pit, barrel_ is by
James C. Watkins & Paul Andrew Wandless. The enhanced barrel firing setup
is by Texas' own Randy Broadnax, the turtle potter. I don't think you need
double walled pipe at all, but you will need the thicker, black pipe if you
get stove pipe. Does the book specify double walled? I guess your welded
material would work if you can keep it from leaking air. From what I can
tell, the draft takes awhile to form and any lose pipe would not help.

From what I remember, the set up doesn't really call for an insulated
stack. Be sure to take pictures of your project and share with mudtown. I
just ran two pit fired pots over to a repeat customer and I've got the
green for some clay and my own lengths of stove pipe. Yeehaw!
