Dear Clayarters, we had our annual appreciation dinner for potters that
contribute to the annual Empty bowl project tonight and I found out that =
we
are still lacking some bowls for this year's event that will take place =
in 2
weeks time. We still have several families that were displaced because =
of
Katrina that are to some extend in the care of our Salvation Army. I was
wondering if it would be okay to ask you guys to help contribute to our
Empty bowl event this year. In the 7 years that I've been doing this, we
went from good to better and I would hate to see it go down at this =
stage.
If I get one bowl (cereal bowl size) from several of you guys, it will
quickly fill up the shortage. If you are interested in donating a bowl,
please e-mail me personally and I will send you the address of our local
Salvation Army so that you can send it directly to them. Thanks that I =
can
also rely on Clayart for this kind of thing.

Good idea Lisa. You can send bowls to:

Empty Bowls
Att. Barbara Vaughn
Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary
527 Carnation St.
Tupelo, MS 38804

It would really be appreciated.
Please let me still know if you plan to send bowls. I would like to keep =
up
and at least send you a thank you note.

For those of you that might be new with this project I will explain:
Once a year different potters communities across America make a combined
effort to help charity associations (mostly the Salvation Army) to raise
money to feed the hungry in their area. In our area it takes place =
during
Ash Wednesday during lunch time. Potters donated bowls and restaurants
donate bread and soup. The public buy tickets and pick up their lunch =
and a
surprise bowl. We also have a silent auction of other pots that potters
donate.
I chose this as my big donating project of the year. Potters in our
community have a good standing relationship with the organizers of our =
Empty
Bowl project and it escalated to other things like a Bowl marathon at =
least
once a year. We even started doing workshops to benefit the Salvation =
Army
and the best thing that we as potters get out of it apart from the
satisfaction that we do contribute to society, is the wonderful meals =
these
ladies prepare for us.
I get many, many requests throughout the year to donate for different
organizations and you've seen me complain about that before, but I do
believe that artists should give to their community if they want to get
back. Which ever donating project or projects I choose, I try to plan =
them
for the year ahead and the Empty Bowls is one of those that I feel that =
our
organizers understand what we do as potters.
They advertise for us, prepare clay, help us glaze; feed us on marathon =
days
etc. They do their best to create a partnership that is good for the
community and good for us as potters.
If any of you have good ideas that work in your community, please share =
them
with us. Our Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary is very eager to implement =
new
ideas that will benefit them and the potter's community.
Thanks again.
