cone 6 breaking glazes and hardpanning

I have a question for those who have made this glaze. How do you get it not
to hardpan? My attempts at this glaze settles in the bottom of the
container before I can use it. Any ideas? Gary Harvey, Palestine TX Yes,
I have the book.

Hey Gary,

I had a problem with Licorice and Waterfall not staying suspended back in
December. Both mixes were a couple of years old and hadn't been used in
awhile. I solved the problem by taking as much water off the top as I
could. This seems to have done the trick, though I don't know why since I
had not added any water to them since I originally made them.

Since I'm back to concentrating on cone 6, the glazes won't sit around for a
long period of time unused.

Bert:

If the glazes have a fair amount of Nepheline Syenite or frits I usually put a bit of epsom salt in the water mix before adding the ingredients. THis seems to help.

Gary

If my glazes have a significant amount of nephline syenite or frif, I usually put some epson salt in the water before adding the ingredients. This helps me. Also, I've had some luck in putting in some sodium silicate (water glass) in the mix after I've carved the hard pan out and gotten the mix up.

I had a bit of diffuculty with Waterfall Brown hardpaning and put 1
tablespoon of Epsom Salt (dissolved in a cup of warm water) into a 10k

We had a similar hardpanning/suspension problem/issue with the Caribbean Se=
a
Green, but not with the Waterfall Brown (from the Mastering Cone 6 Glazes
book). Could barely break it up from the bottom of the pan. To solve the
problem, we first added bentonite (as a slurry) to the wet mixture, but it
did not help at all. We then contacted Ron Roy, who suggested that the
problem had to do with the water quality (he said that he uses soft water i=
n
his glazes), and that we should replace the water in the glaze mixture with
distilled water and/or add a small amount of flocculant, like Epsom salt.

The addition of Epsom salt solved the problem. We applied Ron's Epsom salt
prescription: use a 1:8 solution, or 2 tbsp of Epsom salt to a cup of water
(heat to dissolve the salt). We added just 5 drops of the solution to the
1,000 gram mixture, and voila! no more hardpanning. This glaze, by the way,
should not be too thin, as we had it, otherwise it does not coat or color
very well (when fired).

Many thanks to Ron Roy and John Hesselberth, the authors of the book, who
have been very generous with their time in providing valuable advice.

Benjamin Kant on mon 11 jun 12

Hi Birgit:

This is the 100% recipe at 100g times 10 (so dry weight, of course). Have
to say that I added the 5 drops to start, expecting to need to add more, as
needed, but that amount was already sufficient. So it is possible that a
smaller initial amount of the flocculant would have been OK too (but will
never know), and perhaps adding one drop at a time and re-mixing until
getting the desired result is the better way to go. We don't want to
overflocculate the mixture either, you know.

Hi Benjamin; Sometimes it seems an answer comes up just when you are
forming the question, I have also had a problem with hardpanning in the
MC^6 clear liner. We do have hard water.

What I wondered was the 1000 gr. you refer to is that dry measure or with
water? Just to have a better reference to the amount to add.

Thanks, Birgit Wright
