There's more information than you'd believe possible on the Porcelain
Painters International Online web site. This is the home page for an
Internet list for china painters, much like Clayart. The person who runs it
is Marci Blattenberger, the Mel Jacobsen of PPIO. She does some pretty
amazing things with luster.

I am going to use lusters for the first time. What do I use to thin them
and to clean the brushes?
Thanks.

What kind of lustre are you using? If you are using gold, AKA Liquid Bright
Gold, then use "Gold Thinner" for thinning and cleaning. You can also use a
petroleum based solvent such as kerosene or turpentine for cleaning.

Hanovia makes a Luster thinner called Luster essence. They also make one
for metallics called Gold essence. Runs about $4 for 1/2 oz. I use Hanovia
brush cleaner for my brushes. I have a brush for each color I use. You can
these items online or at any ceramic shop.

Dear Mallory Serebrin,=20

You ask << I am going to use lustres for the first time. What do I use =
to thin them
and to clean the brushes? Thanks. >>

I suggest you ask your supplier for the application instructions and =
data sheets for the product you are purchasing. Read these thoroughly. =
Also try to access Margery Clinton's Book "Lustres" from the Complete =
Potter Series. ISBN 0-86417-410-1.

It is not advisable to dilute Resinate lustres, they are constituted to =
be used directly from the vial. IF Liquid Bright Gold is diluted the =
result will be an insipid pink with no brilliant yellow metallic shine. =
Clean brushes in Lavender Oil or Pure Spirits of Turpentine.

Great Medium to work in. Have fun.

Best regards,

Ivor Lewis.

Liquid Bright Gold can become too dry to brush properly, and "Gold Thinner"
or "Gold Essence" which are specifically made for the purpose, should be
added a drop or two at a time until proper brushing consistency is restored.
Gold thinner or essence are too expensive to use for brush cleaning,
turpentine or paint thinner work just fine. Also, Liquid Bright Gold often
comes from the manufacturer a little too thin, and will benefit from
allowing it to dry out a bit by leaving the bottle uncapped for a few days.
It takes a little experience to learn the proper brushing consistency.
