Hello Gemma,

Welcome to the world of ceramics, it's big and has a lot of different
stuff in it.

For us to help you, we need to know a few things.

What kind of kiln did you get for your partner, and how hot will it
fire? It should have a "maximum temperature" on it somewhere, or in
the manual.

Most porcelain is high fired to the cone 10 range, about 2350F. Some
is formulated for slightly lower temperatures, cone 6 (2250F?).

Porcelain is made of kaolin, feldspar and quartz (mostly). Where to
buy it depends on where you live. Look in your area for a ceramic
supplier, or pottery supplier. They will have all kinds of great stuff.

A couple of good places to buy books are "The Potter's Shop" in
Massachusetts and Axner ceramic supply in Florida. Again it depends
where you live. Some of the others on the list may have
recommendations for beginner's books, the ones I used are fairly dated.

Good luck,

Paul Herman
