i have a cone-art kiln in my studio. yesterday
whilst cleaning up around the kiln i noticed that
the metal(?) plate which sits on the kiln stand
and supports the body of the kiln is "rotting". do
i have to buy a new kiln or can i use a metal
sheet laid on top of the stand? if not metal what
should or could i use. i hate the idea of buying
a new stand and wold like to retrofit. also the
idea of lifting the kiln to place something under
is a bit daunting. could use some good sugestions

The easiest way to repair a rusted base is to lay a piece of galvanized
sheet metal between the kiln and kiln stand. You don't even need to remove
the old base from the kiln.

You can buy the galvanized sheet metal from a hardware store. It should be
large enough to protect the entire kiln bottom.

You certainly can just put another metal sheet over the existing one, but
take the kiln off the stand and examine the stand carefully to make certain
the rest of the stand and legs are in good shape.

You could get a piece of galvanized sheet metal from a Home Depot/Lowes kind
of place about the size of the stand. If buying a larger sheet, stop by a
small sheet metal shop and ask if they'd cut the sheet to the size you need.
Take them a mug or two to barter with.
