See Zamek's excellent article on gerstley borate substitutes at

http://www.ceramicsmonthly.org/mustreads/substitutions.asp

You should read this article to understand about gerstley
borate, glaze formulation, ingredient substitution, the
attraction of potters and others to floating blues, and
other technical matters.

You should also read it to take advantage of the
opportunity to see some good close-up photography of
glaze surfaces, and actually see the turbulence of phase
separation.

In fact, if you can read only one on-line article about
glazes this year, this should be it! One for a man,
two for a horse! It dices it slices, you can't live
without it!

What??????? To a Potter??????

Mary,
So for confusion on that. I was attempting humor. Floating blue is a finick=
y
glaze that many are enamored with. If you do a google image search for
"floating Blue" you can see some examples of the glaze.
