I am a student of a student of Paul and Pete's. My teacher maintains the
same attitude towards both of them, and towards making mistakes. When I was
at the San Francisco Art Institute my instructors there had the same
attitudes about mistakes as well. Because of this I have learned to be
unafraid of trying things that are "different". Sometimes I'm reinventing
things, sometimes I'm exploring new territory, and sometimes I'm doing the
same things that have been done for millenia.

But it's all good.

Forgive me....but a few comments
On Voulkos as a person....
I was a student of
Paul Soldner...and what I gained
From the experience was Paul's
Profound respect for Pete....
In many instances Paul would
Tell stories of his experience
As a student of Pete's while in
school...I think
He held many of the same values
And taught in much the same way...
It was important to have the freedom
to explore your own vocabulary/vision/
NO RULES....(Which is sometimes
difficult terrain to walk)
And the responsibility to discover
Your path yourself...
When asked for a crit...the
Response was "what does it
Matter what I think?"
It throws the burden of making
Choices back in your lap....
Which is where you are in life
Anyway....
Paul taught how important it is
To make mistakes...and within that
Space is the opportunity to discover
Something new...I wish I could stress
Just how important that last comment is....
The zone of work where you are lost
Is a powerful space to occupy...
And one with huge potential....
The process of teaching was more
About the teacher being a force to
experience...to
Work along side and absorb as
Much as possible.
I am profoundly grateful for
Their wisdom...The teaching was
Very sneaky...and I often hear
Paul's voice explaining what I
Need to know at critical times,
Just from remembering his stories....
So...Peter Voulkos left gifts
In his travels through life....
