red iron oxide wash -- how to

updated wed 7 dec 05

I am wanting to use a red iron wash on a platter for some streaks and lines;
but, cannot find a recipe for the wash. Can someone help? And, do you put
this on bisque-ware? Any other precautions? What will the red color turn
out like in Reduction? In Oxidation?

Mary,
Do you have any gerstley borate? I've not tried a GB sub for my RIO wash, but here's the formula I use extensively:

60% RIO
40 GB

How it looks in reduction and oxidation depends on your body and glaze, and how concentrated you use it.
The metallic and rich surface is really a result of reduction, though.
