pacifica wheel problem

updated fri 9 dec 05

My old Pacifica has a tendency to die from time to time and then come
back to life for no reason. It's died again and has strange symptoms.
The power light flickers continuously, so I'm thinking it's not the
fuse although the light is normally steady. But there's no response
on the foot pedal.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Thank you!

Mary, first of all, if it is flickering on and off intemitently then
be very careful. There is a good chance that there is some type of
short. If this is bad enough and you come into contact with say the
wheel head and at the wrong time you may end up with a shocking
experience. The trouble is either in the wheel or at the wall. Are you
sure that the plug that you are connected to is in good shape?
Chances are it is not the fuse per say, it is designed to blow in
the case of overload or dead short to ground, but it could be the fuse
holder. Unplug the wheel and look at the contol box (that's the thing
that the fuse is in.) Remove the fuse from its holder and then grasp the
holder receptackle for the fuse. Try and wiggel it back and forth. There
should not be any movement. If there is no movement get yourself a
flashlight and look inside and see if there is any corrossion. If there
is carefully clean it out.
One other easily remedied possibility is the power supply line
itself. Check your plug for corrossion/damage as well as the rubber
insulation around the cord. On my old 800 the insulation has given up
the ghost and the wires became distressed so I just replace the cord.
If it is not one of these then there may indeed be a problem with
the power supply itself, which is located in the same box that the fuse
lives in. You will either need to trouble shoot the box or just replace
it all together. Give the folks at Pacifica a call and ask to speak to
one of their technicians. They can probably walk you through the problem.
Hope this helps

My older Pacifica started with just such symptoms and over time they got
worse. The speed became erratic then nonfunctional. I tried to overhaul
the pedal...with not success. Eventually I bought a new controller with a
new pedal and have had smooth sailing for many years of heavy use.

Hi Mary,
I have recieved your message quite late so you
probably have lots of responses to your question.
Just in case you havn't I'll add my 2 cents. Your
problem probably is in the electronic box (where
the light & switch are located) and I would guess
that you will need a whole new system. We had a
similiar problem and we did have to replace it
all, which included a new foot pedal. Contact the
Laguna people in California (toll free) and visit
with them-they handle the Pacifica. Good
luck---Reg
