Dear Friends,
Has it been established that it is a biological agent that is growing? I =
do know this does happen because terracotta brazing pots that I make get =
a nice coating of green stuff both inside and outside, especially within =
the footring, when put away after being cleaned if they have not been =
oven dried. But these are unglazed and I accept it as part of the =
scenery. Mould washes away easily and we keep in good health..."Touch =
Wood"....
But I had another thought. I recall from the original post that these =
posts were manufactured by a German Company. Given that they were an =
earthenware fabric there is a possibility the original clay might =
contain Lime. If this is disseminated finely through the clay then it =
might not cause the usual "Lime Pops". But in use, Calcium oxide could =
dissolve in some fluids, leading to expansion, dissolution and leaching. =
I think this would aggravate crazing, then come to the surface and look =
like white mould growth.
Best Regards,
Ivor Lewis.
