I use .25% macaloid in all my MC6G glazes.

Hi Dawn - I learned this trick awhile back: I mix the glaze to a thick cream consistency at first and
sieve it 3 to 4 times through an 80 mesh sieve. ( I have to scrub it through with a brush or my fingers)
I then let it set for a day to let all the particles absorb the water evenly. After a day or so, I then add water
to the consistancy needed to apply the glaze.
Hope this works for you...

My MC6 glossy clear glaze is settling out in the bottom of the bucket
immediately after stirring. What should I do? I added 1% bentonite but
it didn't help.

Thanks,

Dawn

Hi Dawn,

Did you really get the bentonite dispersed? It is very difficult to
add to a glaze that is already mixed. It is best mixed in dry,
although you can make a slurry of it and a little water in a blender--
then add it to your wet glaze. If 1% well dispersed doesn't work, try
2%. If that still doesn't work you can add Epson salts--we tell you
how in the book--maybe page 30 or so.

But I suspect you did not get the bentonite well dispersed or,
perhaps, made a mistake in the original mixing of the glaze or in the
screening of it.--with Wollastonite it really needs to be put through
an 80 mesh screen 2 or 3 times. That glaze has 20% clay and no
particularly bad actors like Neph Sy. It does have 20% frit, but the
clay should be enough to hold that in suspension.

Regards,

John

Dawn,
I have just finished a two week firing session, in which I fired this glaze several times.
I only sieved it twice (60 mesh) and used it within a 6 hours of mixing.
It is a wonderful glaze, I had 100% success with it.
I did add 2% bentonite. Maybe our raw materials are differing some, because I've had no problems with settling at all. The glaze is one of the easiest I've ever worked with.

I might add, that I fired this glaze (using rutile, iron, cobalt carb) in light reduction in my propane kiln up to cone 7 in fact, and it is even more stunning than the oxidized firings. The most beautiful results were on the iron bearing body rather than the white.

It would be very easy to be seduced away completely from my normal cone 10 firings, if I could achieve more fabulous glazes this easily at cone 6. I knocked 4 hours off my normal firing schedule, that's a lot of gas saved.
I am really looking forward to trying more formula's in Mastering Cone 6.
JH and RR's book was a wonderful investment for me.

Hi Dawn,

That glaze has 20% clay in it so it should not settle out - perhaps it's
just too thin. If that is the problem let the glaze settle till there is
clear water on top (overnight should do it) and take most of the water off
- then stir some back in till the glaze is about the consistency of table
cream.

See our section on mixing glazes for more precise ways of gauging glaze
thickness in the bucket.

It could be you local water I suppose - so if that does not work let me
know and we can try some other cures.
