I did some further research, just because I was curious, and I was mistaken
about the masters-level degree. All it says is that he was at University of
Minnesota from 1967 to 1971, no mention of a degree.

All that aside, he does make very fine pots, and I understand that he is a
very good teacher.

Mark Pharis has an MN (isn't that a masters of nursing?) degree from
University of Minnesota, 1971. That's probably how they squeaked him in as
studio art faculty, since the terminal degree is the master's level (MFA).
State universities are uniformly strict on this, although less so when he
was hired. Now, no one gets a teaching job in a state college or university
unless they have the required terminal degree, regardless of the
individual's talent and accomplishment. Fortunately, private schools still
have a lot more flexibility, and can hire someone based solely on talent and
accomplishment.
