Tony, Tone, Toni,

Come on brother, fess up, maybe you just haven't learned yet how to throw off the hump. If you want to learn a "crack fee" method of throwing off the hump, come on down to my neck of the woods and I will gladly show you how. Now if I had a video like you, I could call it "no cracka de hump bowl," and we could trade. Yet another project on the back burner!

Seriously, here is a technique I've adapted from what I learned in Korea: pull the clay up, cone (in your case, very large dildo--be aware, you will always get snickering--especially from high school students) use your thumbs and johnny apple in the center and butterfly open. Before you pull and mark the bottom edge of your piece on the exterior lowest part of the bowl, cup, etc, run your thumbs back and forth form center out about an inch or so--I think I do it 5 times: one to the right, two to the left, three to the right and so forth, like dance lessons--and then carry on raising the wall, shaping, etc. This has worked for me with any claybody I have used. Have fun and enjoy some crack free hump throwing.

Well, there has been posts on what causes s cracks and how to prevent them-
change clays was one of them.
I get s cracks when throwing off the hump and I've compressed till the cows
come home. I have two remedies that I have learned that hide the nasty
crack. David Shaner demonstrated taking a dollup of clay and putting it in
the middle of the footring after trimming and throwing it over where the
crack will some it's ugly little face. He added a little whoppee to make it
look like a trimmed whoppee. David Hendley holds a bisque dildo on the
inside of the t-bowl and in the foortring puts the same wee dollup and
presses his chop mark into the dollup. This compresses the crack between the
dildo and the chop stamp. I have used both methods and it hides the crack.
i was tempted to use the subject headline of cracks and dildos, but I knew I
was pushing my luck with the desert blonde.
Say no to cracks.
Cheers,
Tony

There are some clays that are VERY prone to S-cracking and mine is one
of them: fine grained, small grog size. I have tried a similar
technique to what Tony is describing with limited results. The best
solution I've used is to put the hump thrown pots on sheetrock or
hardibacker shelves. They absorb water from the bottom of the pot. It's
foolproof.
