I use a mix, by volume, of 1/3 each of the following materials to make
pedestals for crystalline glaze firing: alumina/kaolin/sawdust.

This "pedestal mix" replaces soft firebrick and clay pedestals. This mix
stands up to glaze melting all over it and doesn't break down/melt.

I use them both dry and fired, doesn't seem to matter.

They also don't shrink very much.

Perhaps this might be alternative to wasters or pieces of broken shelves.
