red glazes; encapsulated cadmium

Non burgundy reds, more like Irish Setter or chestnut or sherry reds can be
achieved with plain old iron oxide. As my recipes in Twice Fired Glazes
demonstrate....These glazes have been replicated by others who have digital
kilns, by slow cooling, something Ron explained a while ago.

As to the encapsulated cadmiums. I KNOW NOTHING about them except what I
was told when they first came out. That while they are safe to handle raw,
the encapsulation may be destroyed in the glaze firing, allowing the cadmium
to "get out" and therefore the glaze might leach cadmium. I DO NOT KNOW IF
THAT STILL APPLIES, but I certainly would think twice before using them in a
glaze on functional ware.
