skutt kiln lid

updated thu 6 oct 05

I have a large Skutt, electric kiln with computer control panel. The lid =
snapped out of the hinge and fell back and hit something. Now there is =
now a small area, perhaps 4x5 where it looks like a layer of the brick =
is going to just peel off, what material can I use to fix that so it =
does not come off?

Thanks,

If only a thin layer of firebrick is peeling away, you might get away with
cleaning off the flaked, loose firebrick and applying kiln coating to seal
the lid. (You can make kiln coating by watering down firebrick cement. Brush
on the coating, and then wipe it off with a rag.)

Or you could "glue" the damaged firebrick piece onto the lid. First, remove
the lid and place on a flat surface so that the inner side of the lid is up.
Spray each broken firebrick surface with water, apply kiln cement to both
surfaces, and press together tightly. Hold for one minute. Then allow to dry
for 24 hours.

It is important to make the cement seam as thin as possible. The ideal is
about 1/16" thick. Also, it helps to add dishwashing soap to the water that
you spray onto the firebricks. Add 1 drop of soap to a cup of water.
