recycling newspapers and commercial slip...another question about

paper clay

Okay, I know many of you who make paper clay use toilet paper. But the
reason I asked about newspaper was that I have a lot of it, and I can't
burn all of it in my fireplace, and rather than throw it away, I thought I
could use it for paper clay.

Now, I was reading in yet another clay book that you can use shredded
newspaper and "any kind of slilp." (from The Complete Potter by Mattison)

Anyway, I wondered if this included commercial casting slip. The reason I
ask is I have 6 gallons of the stuff given to me along with the kiln I
bought and I don't see how I'll use it (since the complicated molds are
beyond my realm and may not be very usefull in the end, anyway.)

So, I was thinking if I soaked the newspaper, got one of those mixers that
attatch to drills, and mix in into the slip...I'd have paper clay.

But someone once said commercial slip is different in composition. Would
the paper I'm adding be enough of a change that it would work well, or
would I have a problem somewhere down the line? Would it even stiffen and
become workable clay?

Thank you all once again. I know newbies are annoying, but I really do
apprecicate all the advice and help you've given me.

Newspaper will definitely work, but it seems to
get much, much stinkier than other types of paper.
Really reeks after a few weeks.

It would probably work OK for press-molding and
slab work, but not so well for other methods.
(Just a guess.) Casting slip is very non-plastic,
and though the paper may offset some of this
effect, (I think), it will still be pretty weird
stuff, and possibly not in a good way. Still, if
you've got it anyway, make up a small test batch
and let us know. Might be interesting.

paper clay

I have used newspaper in paperclay but Snail is right. It does get stinky.
To stop this I put 1/2 cup of clorox bleach in the mix. Newspaper doesn't
break down as quickly but works fine as long as you soak it in the hottest
water you can. You can also use the paper egg trays and they work well.

Debbie
I have included paper into casting slip with good results
however I then poured the slurry into press molds
and simply let it stiffen in the mold
rather than allowing it to stiffen first
so I could handbuild with it later

typically, I make casting slip out of my regular claybody,
I leave the grog in it, and I age it. Even though I add sodium silicate
or darvan and soda ash to the slip,
that slip seems to be able to handle
a bit more manipulation than some of the commercial casting slips I
have tried

the paper slurry/slip will take longer to dry than regular clay slip

I know someone who incorporated newspaper rather than other paper into
slip and I tried using some of that slip
.I don't know what they did to try and break down the newspaper but it
hadn't broken down very well
and I found the large pieces of paper to be bothersome... in that
particular instance!
